Israel has no system in place to provide dental care to needy children, but thanks to the benevolent support from friends and visiting volunteer dentists from around the world, Dental Volunteers for Israel has, since 1980, provided free, quality, caring treatment to children who would otherwise receive no care at all! In 2008, DVI's Trudi Birger Dental Clinic treated 3,425 children and youth - from 5 to 18 years old – from the Municipality's Welfare Division and various shelters. DVI's children come from all the diverse backgrounds represented in Jerusalem’s indigent sector and most are seeing a dentist for the first time in their lives. For many it is also the first they have heard about oral hygiene. At DVI each child receives their first toothbrush and is taught how to keep their precious teeth healthy for a lifetime.
